Urban Thai

I was so excited to find this cute little area full of restaurants just a few minutes away from my apartment on my run home today. We set out with no idea which restaurant we would dine at and just glanced at a bunch of menus outside the restaurants. We finally settled on a Thai Place, Urban Thai. I love Thai food, but I like really good, authentic Thai, not so much the greasy American version.

The menu was quite big, as it is at a lot of Thai restaurants, and I saw a few things that caught my eye. I didn’t end up having that snack before I left, so I was starving, and I tend to get cranky when I’m really hungry, which isn’t pleasant for anyone. 😉 I started with the Fresh Jae Rolls, which were fresh vegetable and fried tofu wrapped in rice paper served with peanut sauce.

They were actually pretty good, but the tofu wasn’t fried like they said it was just raw, which I didn’t mind at all.

For my main course, I got the Tom Yum Talay, a hot soup with assorted seafood with fresh mushroom in spicy lemongrass broth.

I love Tom Yum so this was probably the highlight of the meal. It had tons of fresh seafood – scallops, mussels, shrimp, and squid, and the broth was delicious.

I also got the Grilled Shrimp Papaya Salad with my soup. The salad had julienned green papaya, cherry tomatoes, and roasted crushed peanuts, and was tossed with a spicy lime vinagrette.

The salad was just off. I usually love green papaya salad but something with the texture of the papaya wasn’t working. I did eat the three shrimp that were grilled on a skewer but left most of the salad part behind.

Overall, the meal was decent, but not a place I would return to. My boyfriend got the chicken curry which he said was very bland, and the special salmon appetizer which was over-the-top spicy. I’ve never heard him complain about something being too spicy (in fact he usually asks for things extra spicy!), so I had to try it and wow, was he right. I just had a tiny little bite and my mouth was on fire for a long time.

There’s another Thai restaurant in our neighborhood, Neramitra, that’s even closer and a lot more authentic that we will be frequenting instead. There were a bunch of other cute restaurants including a diner, a Mexican place, an Ethiopian restaurant, a pub, a few italian places, and a kabob place that I would love to go back to. Oh well!

Have a good night!
