Graze

Hiya! Today FLEW by and I ended up making some bad decisions, but it happens…

I’m talking 7 points (aka roughly 350-400 calories) of candy. Why? Because I went to CVS and saw gummy starbursts and they spoke to me, so I grabbed a bag and they were buy one get one, so I grabbed two… and then I ate them both. Plus some Swedish fish that were given to me (just a few) but whyyyyyy did I do that!? Argh.

After work I was pretty hungry, since my “snack” was candy aka not substantial at all. I was craving a green smoothie, and so I poured some soy milk into my blender and the milk just started leaking out and I realized the glass part was broken. I made due with my hand blender but now I have to get a new blender… ugh!

In the mix:

  • 1 cup soymilk (1 pt)
  • 1 medium banana (1.5 pts)
  • 4 frozen strawberries (.5 pts)
  • handful of spinach (0)

It was pretty good but the hand mixer didn’t grind the spinach up as well so there were some chunks in there and I didn’t care for it too much. Also, I didn’t have enough frozen stuff in there so the banana frozen or some ice cubes would have made it better.

I was thinking about going for a run but was just feeling pretty blah, so decided to go to Costco instead. I have a membership but have only ever gone there for a specific purpose (stocking up for a party) so I wanted to go and just check out what they had in the way of healthy options and see what I could find. I ended up doing pretty well, but its tough when you’re only 1 or 2 people to shop there, because all of the containers of everything are HUGE. I tried to find some things that had a long shelf life or that I thought I could finish before then went bad, and I ended up doing pretty well!

  • Organic Spinach
  • 6 cans chickpeas
  • Stonyfield Organic Fruit at the Bottom Yogurt
  • Babybel Light Cheese
  • Roasted Red Peppers
  • Ginger Dressing
  • Multigrain Crackers
  • Tofu
  • Light English Muffins

All of that stuff was $53, which felt pretty expensive for what I got, but some of the things I needed to stock up on and I think will last me for a while.

On the way home, the grazing began. I had one piece of babybel cheese and one serving of those crackers – which are AWESOME. You get 15 crackers for 2 points (130 calories, 4.5 grams of fat, 3 grams of fiber) and they are completely delicious. I ate them in the car because I was really hungry. Then I had the rest of the cheese from the Farmer’s Market (4ish points) and then realized I actually needed to eat something before I munched the whole night away.

I remembered the leftover succotash from the other night and had a bowl of that:

And then I had some more raw cabbage that I had chopped up this morning with some of the Ginger Dressing from Costco:

I mixed 2 tbsp of it (1 pt) on the shredded cabbage and ate almost this whole bowl:

This dressing is soo good! It tastes a lot like the ginger dressing you get in Japanese restaurants on their house salad, and is just so flavorful and low cal. The ingredient list is pretty short too and its very tasty. I’m glad I like it because the jar I got is enormous!

Tomorrow is going to be a better day on the eating and exercise front, I can feel it.

Are you a Costco/BJ’s/Sam’s Club/wholesale shopper? Why or why not?

  1. I just got back from Costco! I live close enough to one that I can just run over there for one or two things. With the amount of produce I go through every week it’s a screaming deal!

  2. I’m a Sam’s shopper, but mostly b/c I have a membership under my mom and dad’s business that my parents pay for:) I like to stock up on meat when I go there, like chicken and salmon. I also used to buy a lot of bottled water there b/c it’s cheaper, but that was before I started using a brita water filter and just filling up my reusable water bottles. I think their gas is cheaper too. I hear about all the great food people buy at Costco, but I rarely see the same things at Sam’s:(. I don’t even think we have a Costco in my town.
If it makes you feel any better, I opened a box of peanut butter puffins last night and probably ate 1/3 of the box. I wasn’t even that hungry, I just liked the way it tasted!! Ugh! Talk about the opposite of intuitive eating!!
    Tomorrow is another day, right?:)

    • It was a sad day when I had to buy my own Costco membership and it made me feel like I was an adult. Very sad.

And yes, today is a NEW day!

  3. haha ive had to pull out the hand blender so many times before i acutally invested in a real blender. than god for that! lol. oh well, in the meantime, what can ya do!

i dont go to costco only cuz whenever i buy in bulk i eat in bulk or use up products in bulk. im not sure how many people are like this, but i do use more when i know more is there. but certain things like toilet paper or what not makes total sense. in the right situations, those places can be a smart idea!!

    xoxo ❤

    • haha maybe thats my problem.. buy in bulk, eat in bulk. We shall see how this goes because I haven’t been there in ages!

  4. Sometimes that candy calls for you. There’s nothing to do but give in… it only makes the craving that much more ridiculous the next time! And we won’t talk about all the leftover M&M’s I had from baking cookies last week… and where they all went very very quickly (ahem… mr. tummy, I’m talking to you!)

  5. i bought the same ginger dressing!! i threw it on some salmon! yum yum yum

  6. Beth, I’m so sorry your blender broke! Maybe you can find a cheap one at Goodwill? That’s where I would look first.

As for the grazing, I have BEEN THERE. But you have a great attitude and, like you said, today is a new day 😉

I have been struggling this week with fitting in time to exercise, ugh…I really need to workout, but I’ve been so busy.

Hope you have a great day!

    • I know total bummer about the blender, but these things happen. I had it for a year and a half and used it pretty hard so I can’t say I’m THAT surprised.

  7. I’m a big grazer/snacker. Sometimes when you’re craving the candy, its better just to give in. It’ll be worse in the long run if you don’t. All you can do is move on!

I go to Sam’s Club and I love it. We buy our water there (trying to talk hubby into getting a Brita – he can’t get past the tap water), pet food and believe it or not they have nice clothes there too!

My mom just bought me a fruit infusion pitcher from QVC. It has a separate well that slides into the pitcher to infuse your water with whatever fruit you put in there. I’ve got pear in there now and have some lemon and lime to use. It’s delicious!

    • I agree about it being better to give in sometimes, but I should have just bought one bag instead of two!! Lesson learned.

VERY cool about the fruit infusion pitcher! I’ve never heard of those.

  8. I always get the jumbo packs of arnold sandwich thins from Sam’s Club. I get the giant tubs of spinach too, haha. I eat spinach like its my job, but I find that no matter how fast I go through it, the bottom layer of leaves always turn gross and wet and I have to throw it out.

    • I’m going to race against myself with the spinach to make sure that doesn’t happen! I figure I can make a reallllly green GM if its on the verge!

  9. I used to be a member at Costco and I’ve been thinking about buying another membership. I see these HUGE boxes of Vitatops everyone gets and almost can’t stand it anymore.

    • It’s funny you say that because I grabbed a box and then put it back two times before leaving it in the freezer. They have the deep chocolate flavor ones for 9.99 for a pack of 12. I might just have to go back and get them but room im my freezer is limited right now!

  10. I just joined Costco in April to get stuff for a party, but have yet to make it back. I’m hoping to this weekend though. I face the same issue of shopping just for 2, so I worry about overbuying. I love going and trying the free samples!

    • Last night they had NO samples! I don’t know if its because I’ve only gone on a weekend and there are usually samples every few feet, but it was so disappointing!

  11. I hope your today goes super well + you get some exercise in, it’ll make you feel so much better! Esp. after a wittle candy binge.. 🙂

Costco is my faaavorite. We buy the huge 10lb bag of pinto beans there, and quinoa, and 10ish lbs of organic brown rice, and bread. Shoot. They’re pretty nice. and recently they’ve added new organic/veg/wholesome goods. We used to get spinach there but are stopping as of this weekend, ’cause we get too many bad leaves and not enough crispy green ones!

😀 And they sell spinach pancakes (aka: best frozen thing I’ve ever found)!!

  12. Caitlin from HTP did a great post a few months ago on what she buys from Costco. I was just there this weekend (i’m guessing you went to the pentagon city one?) and stocked up on some stuff… 2.5lb bag of spinach, frozen fruit, flatout wraps, fage greek yogurt, hummus, falafel, cabot reduced fat cheese, and dried blueberries. i’m only shopping for me, so it is hard to buy in bulk… i just dont buy too much there and get things with long shelf life.

  13. We buy certain things at Costco (cat food, litter, eggs, etc). Basically things that we go through a LOT!

  14. Love love love Costco! I’ve never seen that huge box of tofu! MUST find!

  15. I live 2 blocks from a Costco but I’ve never been in there. I’ve gone to Sams with a free daily membership card, but I just don’t need that much food! Maybe when we have kids, but for just the two of us, we wouldn’t get our money’s worth there.

I will have to look for a ginger dressing though, that sounds delicious!

  16. I am totally a Costco (BJs here) gal. Ours has a great produce department!

  17. I love Costco and I actually got that same package of Tofu last time I was there. They have the best stuff!!
